New Period- Rhodesia

Hello!

While it may not fit with the "ultramodern" title of this blog, I am taking on a new period, the Rhodesian Bush War. I am starting with the terrain, and as I hate doing terrain, I want to get it all done before even any figures are ordered.

I started with these native huts. I based them on photos of huts in Zimbabwe, but they could probably work for other African countries as well. They are very simple, being made mostly out of a 5-8mm cardboard tube (which was beyond a b**ch to cut and required liberal application of power tools). The bases are thin hardboard with sand glued to them. I have two other huts like these about halfway done, but since my scenario only requires four, I'm putting them off.

The bases are painted with a brown artist acrylic and drybrushed with V. Iraqi Sand. I used my homemade "mig" pigments on the huts and added little yellow flowers to the static grass.

Less talking more looking...

  1. I got worried when I saw "New Period," but those fears are now gone! Strangely I've been toying with the idea of some sort of African based militia wars the last couple of days, this may push me over the edge; though I still want to focus on current/near future. Thanks for posting.

  2. maybe not ultramodern but still very cool and even though they may not be made for the near future maybe you could find some way to make a near future bush war, still easier to use those figs than me when I changed from medievals to moderns, though I did toy with a real fantasy idea at one point to combine them.

nice huts I imagine that they are made from old toilet paper roles or kitchen towel ones. I must admite that even though I love to make scenery (I would have been more then happy to make some for you) that I can understand that when something is being (as you put it) a b**ch it can really piss you off.

    1. Thanks Gowan,

They are not from paper towel rolls, if they were they'd be way easier to use. I had to cut packing cardboard rolls about 8mm thick with my powersaw. Really quite a workout!

    2. ahh those ones. yes I know them. I have avoided them for obvious reasons... I hate using power tools, all my work is by hand even cutting up the plaster/ fibre board (which you'll see in my church)

bush wars are nasty things to get wrong though ambushes and counter ambushes if your not careful you'll end up in a right mess. I have not done wargaming yet but total war has told me to respect and fear the bush... (not G.W.Bush)

    3. So long as I don't play as insurgents, I'll be fine. Look up "Fireforce" and you'll see what I mean.

  3. They look really good, Winttrix. Well done. Do you know about the B'Maso rules supplement published by Too Fat Lardies for their rules? It covers Rhodesia.
    Here's, Mike

    1. Thanks Mike,

I'm going to use Force on Force and the African Bush Wars 1961-2010 supplement that's coming out a few weeks from now.
